BROS Newsroom

Auditions for Constellations & Crossroads

October 17th, 2017

The Baltimore Rock Opera Society (BROS) and Arena Players, Inc., are seeking multi-talented actors, singers, and dancers for our double header remount of Determination of Azimuth / Battle of Blue Apple Crossing in February 2018!

“Determination of Azimuth” and "Battle of Blue Apple Crossing" are two short-form rock operas that center on prominent figures in African-American history.  “Determination of Azimuth” is an experimental musical about NASA mathematician Katherine Johnson, who recently enjoyed increased visibility thanks to the 2016 film “Hidden Figures.” (But we did it first!) “Battle of Blue Apple Crossing” tells the legend of famous blues musician Robert Johnson and the alleged sale of his soul to the devil for musical talent using southern blues and rock music.

The two shows were originally performed in 2015 as part of the BROS Rock Opera 6-Pack. The production will be a collaborative effort between Baltimore’s Arena Players, the longest continually operating African-American theater in the US, and the BROS, a DIY artist collective that produces original rock musicals.

Show dates are February 9-11 and February 16-18 at Arena Players’ historic theater. There will be a first read in late November with rehearsals to begin the week of December 3, 2017. There will also be a two week break at the end of December to accommodate some holidays.

We will be casting 5 lead roles and 6 supporting roles for this show. The character list is as follows:

Determination of Azimuth
All roles for DOA are non-singing, speaking roles.
• Younger Katherine Johnson (black woman, age 25-40)

• Three Mission Scientists: Guido, Fido, & Charlie (white men, clean shaven, ages 25+)

Auditions will take place at Arena Players, Inc., located just off MLK at 801 McCulloh St. There is a parking lot in the rear of the building accessible via Orchard St and street parking is also plentiful. To reserve your place, PLEASE RSVP to (subject line: DOA/BBAC auditions) with your preferred date and time (listed below).

All actors should prepare one monologue. If a singing role is desired, please prepare one song in addition to one monologue, to total 4 minutes or less of material. We are not seeking specific genres or styles; anything that makes you feel comfortable and demonstrates your range will be fine. ⅛” audio input (headphone cable) into a stereo is available for music playback if necessary; there is no accompanist. Group auditions will begin promptly on the hour for each session. Please expect to stay the entire hour, dress in clothing/shoes appropriate for a group movement exercise, and bring a list of your known weeknight/weekend conflicts through 2/25/18. Walk-ins will be accepted as time permits.

This is a NON-EQUITY show. Actors will receive a small stipend for their work and meals will be provided during all tech and show dates.
